Biography

BIOGRAPHY

Alan Grass is the principal of Alan B. Grass, A Law Corporation and has conducted his law practice through a professional corporation.

After college at Michigan and Harvard Law School, Alan began law practice in Detroit, his hometown, before moving to Los Angeles in 1979. Since then, his practice has focused primarily on estate and gift tax planning and administration, and related representation of individuals and families, including high net worth individuals, non-traditional families and situations involving special circumstances.

While continuing to maintain a full-time client practice, Alan also spent many years as a law professor. He was an associate professor at the Leventhal School of Accounting (Marshall School of Business) at the University of Southern California from 1990 through 2001, teaching business law to undergraduate accounting majors. Previously, he was a professor at Whittier College School of Law, teaching courses in taxation, estate planning and business planning for four years. He also served on the faculty of UCLA Extension, teaching business law as part of CPA review courses. These teaching experiences were invigorating and enjoyable, and have encouraged Alan to make presentations to his peers at continuing education seminars over the years.

The combination of teaching students and representing individuals in very personal matters has enabled Alan to develop his technique of providing complex information and recommendations to clients in a relaxed and friendly manner. The planning process includes a frank and open review and discussion of existing circumstances and objectives with clients, requiring simple and clear explanations of sometimes complicated legal and tax principles. The result is an intimate lawyer-client working relationship that produces a plan designed to implement client goals and objectives while frequently recognizing and resolving sensitive individual issues.

Alan and his wife Julie have been married for over 40 years, and have two sons – Benjamin (a teacher in a French immersion school) and Jonathan (an IT and program development professional) – who both live in New York City. He has been active in several charitable organizations and is a former director and officer of Temple Isaiah. Non-law interests and activities include reading, movies and theater, travel and watching and playing sports and games.

Despite relocating from Detroit so many years ago, Alan’s allegiance remains with the Tigers, Lions, Pistons, Red Wings and all teams playing for the maize and blue of Michigan. For decades, he and his son Jonathan have owned a successful fantasy baseball team called (of course) the Wolverines.
